How to move into wound care as an RPN/LPN

Before you start

• Confirm that the target wound-care duties fit practical-nurse scope in your jurisdiction and workplace.
• Identify a regulated wound-care educator, champion or team that can supervise skill development.

Step by step

1. 1

   Map your current exposure

   List the wound types, documentation systems, prevention work and interprofessional rounds you already encounter. Mark what you perform independently, with an order or under supervision.

   Choose education that matches your scope

   Compare course audience, hands-on requirements, assessment method and recognition by employers. A certificate alone does not expand regulated scope.

3. 3

   Join wound rounds

   Ask your manager or educator to let you observe and then participate within scope. Keep a de-identified learning log of assessments, decisions discussed and follow-up questions.

4. 4

   Complete one improvement project

   Offer to audit documentation, update a supply reference, support prevention education or track a simple quality measure with the wound team.

5. 5

   Translate the work into applications

   Update your résumé with education, supervised experience, committee work and measurable improvements rather than only listing a course title.
